Felipe Duran(pduran@wsu.edu), who began writing poetry after meeting and associating closely with Dr. Sánchez, descends from paternal and maternal ancestors who have continuously lived in the old village of Ysleta in El Paso County since at least the 1700's. He descends from the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo tribe; he is a Tigua/Chicano. His poems, columns, and essays have appeared in magazines, newspapers and journals. He has completed a B.S. in mathematics, M.S. in physics, M.S. in computer science, and A.B.D.(all but the dissertation) in computer science with emphasis in theoretical physics. Duran is a certified disaster recovery planner and is employed in the Information Technology Department at Washington State University, where he first met Dr. Sánchez in 1991. Duran continues to speak, lecture, and read poetry at conferences, workshops, and on television.
